Basic Setup & Custom CSS

Pages: 1 2

Below is just a simple setup with the basic short code - [netsposts]. It will draw all posts from all sites on your network. It defaults to just text with a simple read more link. The meta information shows a link to the blog it was created on but the read more link takes you directly to the post.

The meta information also shows you the date it was published. Later on I'll explain how to make the date appear the way you would like.

The default order of the listing is in descending order of the most recent post published. These can be changed and an example will be shown later on.

The shortcode used is just the basic

The image below gives you a basic understanding of the classes I use for each section.

Network Posts Extended Basic CSS Classes
Click Image for Larger View

The proper way to check the classes of the different parts of the plugin is to use the inspect tool of your browser.

Here are some links for different browsers.

I'm going to add an argument called shortcode_id='custom-id-you-choose' as you know we'll replace custom-id-you-choose with post-title-example. So the shortcode will look like the following:

[[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example']]

What this does is include an ID that wraps all the listings on the given shortcode. That way I can show you the example without messing up the one listing above.

The first example will use the css class netsposts-posttitle to change the look and the size of the post titles. So the following shortcode will be changed to

[[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example']]

and CSS code will will be added to the customize section in the admin area. Appearance >> Customize >> Additional CSS.

#post-title-example .netsposts-posttitle { color: #800000; font-size: 26px; }

It will give you a look like the one below.

As you can see now the title has a brick like color and the font size has been changed to 26px. If you look above at the first basic setting you'll see that it hasn't been affected. I designed it this way so each listing may have its own unique design. In the CSS above the browser will only target the class

.netsposts-posttitle

if it's nestled inside a div with an ID of

#post-title-example

You will not see the dot or number symbol with the inspect tools because they only belong in the css files. What you'll see instead is

id="post-title-example"

and

class="netsposts-posttitle"

The next item we'll target is the class called

netsposts-source

As you can see the text is a little light so if you'd like to make it darker you would use the following. I have changed the id by using the following shortcode:

[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example-2']

Note: With every new example I will change the last digit of the title from 2 to 3, 3 to 4 etc... so it doesn't affect the design of the previous examples. This is how you can have several listings with different designs on the same page.

Below is the css code I have added to the customize CSS area.

#post-title-example-2 .netsposts-source { color: #000000; }

See how that little bit of spacing between characters makes it less fatiguing on the eye. Now we'll do the same thing with the content area.

Shortcode used is

[[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example-4']]

I'm going to change the font-family from Arial Narrow to just plain Arial and add 0.5px of letter spacing so the following is the CSS I have used.

#post-title-example-4 .netsposts-excerpt { font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; letter-spacing: 0.5px; }

Note: With font-family you may add several different ones just in case somebody's computer doesn't contain a certain font it'll use the next one in line. If you font you are trying to use is two characters you must wrap them in quotes as such font-family: "open sans", arial, helvetica; etc...

Notice how the source date has got lighter in color again because I didn't include that part in the above css code. So in order to bring it back you must also add #post-title-example-5

netsposts-read-more-link

You may use this to give it a nice custom look or if you don't like read more links you may hide it all together by adding

and it will hide it on all uses of the plugin or as in the examples above you may pick particular ones you would like to exclude it from.

That looks pretty nice and clean that way. A lot of people only want the title or image to link to the page. These examples don't have images so what we'll do now is add a permalink to the title that will take you directly to the post. Here is the shortcode used.

[[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example-7' include_link_title='true']]

The Rocky Mountains stretch 3,000 km (1,900 mi) in straight-line distance from the northernmost part of British Columbia, in western Canada, to New Mexico in the Southwestern United States. The northern terminus is near the Liard River, while the southernmost point is near Albuquerque, adjacent the Sandia–Manzano Mountains. As you see the title lost its CSS coding because in the above example the class was changed from netsposts-posttitle to netsposts-posttitle-link. The above example where I changed the look of the titles using the following css code.

#post-title-example .netsposts-posttitle { color: #800000; font-size: 26px; }

So I will use the following shortcode and CSS below.

[[netsposts shortcode_id='post-title-example-8' include_link_title='true']]

The CSS code will be the following:

#post-title-example-8 .netsposts-excerpt { font-family: arial, helvetica, sans; letter-spacing: 0.5px; }
#post-title-example-8 .netsposts-source { color: #000000; letter-spacing: 0.5px; }
#post-title-example-8 .netsposts-read-more-link { display: none; }
#post-title-example-8 .netsposts-posttitle-link { color: #800000; font-size: 26px; }

Below is the result with everything applied.

As you can see now the title has a nice permalink to the given post. These examples you may apply to all post types including custom or pages.

Note: All the examples have the excerpt text as text-align: justified. With any of the CSS code above you may just add text-align: left if that is the form you prefer. That is just add

.netsposts-excerpt { text-align: left; }

Of course it could be center or right also.

That's all the basic CSS I will explain for now. As you can see with the above examples and a little knowledge of CSS you can make my plugin look anyway you like. When you read the other pages and their examples you'll might see some nice styling done and using the inspect tools of your browser you may copy and learn from the code and use it anyway you like.

If you are having troubles please remember to visit the support forum.

Page 2 will show you how to have the image to the left or right of the text.
